Recently I have seen a lot of bad dandruff and cradle cap on several of my customers.
What is dandruff?
Dandruff is a fungus and can appear as dry flakes or oil build up on the scalp known as cradle cap. (Cradle cap is common in adults as well as infants). Some people are more fungus prone than others. It's not uncommon for someone to have athletes foot and bad dandruff. It's all coming from the same place.
How do I treat it?
Since dandruff is a fungus, it needs to be treated with an anti fungal. Tea tree oil is an anti fungal, antiseptic and lice repellent leaving a menthol/ minty sensation on the skin. I highly recommend the tea tree shampoo by Paul Mitchell. Another option is to mix tea tree oil (sold in 1-2 oz bottles at Trader Joes) with your regular shampoo. A little goes a long way.
Why does it work?
I know what you are thinking... "How can oil remove the oil on my scalp?" If you are a chemistry person, you know that oil attracts oil. When there is a huge buildup of oil on the hair, the only thing that will break it down is oil. Since tea tree oil removes all the oil on your scalp, make sure to follow up with a deep conditioner to rehydrate the scalp.
I don't recommend using tea tree shampoo every day as it it super drying. It is different for every person, but use it for a day or two and then once a week or every ten days.
If dandruff shampoo or tea tree oil don't work for you, I highly recommend seeing a dermatologist. You may need a prescription for medicated shampoo or have some other type of dermatitis.
